Clevis Hanger vs Band Hanger: How to Choose the Right Pipe Hanger

September 30, 2026 · AFROFIX

AFROFIX standard clevis hanger, UL Listed and FM Approved pipe hanger

Clevis hangers and band hangers (also called swivel ring hangers) are the two most common ways to hang a horizontal pipe from a threaded rod, especially on sprinkler and fire-fighting lines. Both are adjustable, both are made to MSS SP-58 and UL 203, and AFROFIX manufactures both in Egypt. But they are not interchangeable. This guide explains the differences and when to choose each.

The short answer

  • Choose a band hanger for small, light branch lines, typically sprinkler branch piping up to 2" where UL/FM approval is required, and up to 6" otherwise.
  • Choose a clevis hanger for larger and heavier lines, for insulated pipes, and where the pipe needs room to move: it covers 3/4" to 30".

1. Size range and approvals

Clevis hanger Band hanger
Size range 3/4" (20 mm) to 30" (750 mm) 3/4" (20 mm) to 6" (150 mm)
UL Listed sizes 3/4" to 10" 3/4" to 2" (pre-galvanized)
FM Approved sizes 3/4" to 4" 3/4" to 2"
MSS SP-58 Type 1 Type 10
Design load (smallest size) 3.66 kN (3/4") 3.1 kN (3/4")

If your specification calls for UL Listed or FM Approved hangers, check the approved size range first: it is narrower than the full manufacturing range for both products.

2. Material and finish

The AFROFIX clevis hanger is made from carbon steel EN 10111 DD11 (stainless steel on request), supplied plain, zinc plated or hot-dip galvanized. The band hanger is made from pre-galvanized carbon steel to ASTM A653M, supplied plain, pre-galvanized or hot-dip galvanized.

3. Installation and movement

A band hanger has a swivel nut that makes it quick to fit the pipe, and it allows vertical adjustment on the rod. That makes it the fast, economical choice for long runs of small branch piping.

A clevis hanger also allows vertical adjustment, and adds features that matter on bigger lines:

  • It allows small horizontal movements of the pipeline without transferring them to the hanger rod.
  • A 15° swing in either direction lets the pipe feed through without being pinched during installation.
  • Curved edges make it easier to handle and install.
  • From 8" upwards, a pipe sleeve over the cross bolt prevents the clevis bottom deforming under the pipe weight.
  • It supports both insulated and non-insulated pipes; for insulated lines, combine it with an insulation wood frame so the insulation is not crushed at the support.

4. What you need to order with it

Neither hanger includes the hanger rod. Order threaded rod (M6 to M24) and a fixing to the structure: a drop-in anchor for concrete or a beam clamp for steel. The sizes and part-number tables on each product page list the rod size for every hanger size.
